I was just watching game trailers on my Xbox 360 when I came upon the ” Yars Revenge ” trailer, a new game from Atari. I got a little excited about an updated version of the old Atari game since I really enjoyed the game growing up. After I watched the trailer, I felt disappointed like a kid who gets socks for Christmas. Why in the world are the ” aliens ” pretty much human with a technical ” fly ” suit on? They could have at least made their skin a different color.

 Yar's Revenge

That’s like making the ninja turtles human with a shell backpack!

In the original Yar’s Revenge game, you were alien fly people, clearly NOT human. They even had a little story comic in the pamphlet of the game, so this put a concrete image of the aliens in my mind from the old game.

Other games had an effect like this on me as well such as Spyro the Dragon, now a teenager with a girlfriend…really? I want to keep remembering Spyro the dragon as the little dragon he was when I enjoyed the game back in the PSONE days. To me, this really changed the persona of the series. Sure, the Spyro series were on a slow death, so they had to do something I guess, but the new character image really made me not want me to play the series any longer. Well, at least he’s still a dragon!

The main thing is that I think it’s not that great of an idea when companies take a foundation of something and totally screw with it. It’s fine for people that have no attachment to the old ideals and characters of something, but for people who have memories of how a game concept/story/characters used to be, it is a big deal.

Am I just a fan who doesn’t want to let go of the past or are there others like me who want the series of games they love to have a similar feeling that the old ones did?
